I just wanted to pass on a great place for nature study (and just plain fun) for those who live in Snohomish Co.  It's the Portage Wildlife Sanctuary, on Cemetery Road in Arlington.  It's immediately behind a residential area- there is just a sign on a gravel drive way with the name of the place, the hours, and a phone number.  It can be easy to miss.

You drive down the gravel road and find yourself on 122 acres of wetlands. There is a decent place to park, a picnic shelter, an outhouse, and acres and acres of wetlands, trails, more trails, and a kindly refugee from the 60's who loves to talk.  His name is Gene, and he will probably come out to chat, and may accompany you on your walks=)

There's a sweet little dam, a small footbridge and waterfall, and the caretaker lets kids throw rocks in the water.  He said the county frowns on it, but he considers kids part of the environment, too, and they need to throw rocks in the water.

Pam and I spent two hours there this afternoon with a total of 11 children and nobody fell in the water.  For me that indicates a highly successful nature walk.  I am not so sure the children feel the same way=)

There is plenty to see in tennis shoes,
but apparently there's even more to
explore if you wear boots.
Have fun!
